PART – A (10 x 1 = 10 marks)

18. a. Calculate the fugacity of liquid and water at 303 K and 10 bar if the saturation pressure at 303K is 4.241 kPa and specific volume of liquid water at 303 k is 1.004 X10-3 m^3/kg.

b.What is the effect of pressure and temperature on activity.

19. a. Define Chemical potential. What is its physical significance? 5)

b. Derive the Gibbs-Duhem equation.  (10)

20. Prove that if Raoult’s law is valid for one constituent of a binary mixture over the whole concentration range, it must also apply to the other constituent.

21. Derive the Van’t Hoff equation.

22. Explain the Rankine cycle with a neat diagram. Add a note on its application.

23. a. Hydrocarbon oil is to be cooled from 425 K to 340 K at a rate of 5000 kg/h in a parallel flow heat exchanger. Cooling water at a rate of 10,000 kg/h at 295 K is available. The mean specific heats of the oil and water are 2.5 KJ/kg K and 4.2 KJ/kg K respectively. Determine the total change in Entropy. Is the process reversible?  (10)

b. What is the use of Liquefaction processes? (5)

24. a. Describe briefly about the functions of ATP and NADH in the metabolic pathway. (7)

b. Write a note on oxygen consumption and heat evolution in aerobic cultures. (8)

25. a. Estimate the theoretical growth and product yield coefficients for ethanol fermentation by S.cerevisiae as described by the following overall reaction. C6H12O6  → 2 C2H5OH + 2 CO2 (10)

b. Discuss briefly about the elemental balance used in Stoichiometric calculations. (5)
