11. (3) Explain the necessity  of irrigation in India and write the benefits and ‘ill effects of irrigation.
Necessity of irrigation:
1. Less rainfall :. When [total rainfall is less than needed for the crop, artificial supply is necessary. In such case irrigation work may be constructed at a place where more water is available, and then to
convey the water to the area where there is deficiency-of water.
2. Non uniform rainfall: The rainfall may not be uniform over the crop period, which may result in less yield or the crop may die. By the-collection of water during the excess rainfall period, water may be supplied to the crop during the period when there is no rainfall.
3. Commercial crops with additional water: The rainfall in a particular area may be. sufficient to raise the usual crops,'but more water may be necessary for raising commercial and cash crops;
4. Controlled water supply: By constructing proper distribution system, the yield of the crop may be increased.  Application of water to the soil by modern methods of irrigation serves following purposes: It adds water. to the soil to supply the moisture essential for the plant.
It saves the crops from drying during droughts. It cools sci-land, the atmosphere.
It dilutes salts in the Soil.
flit reduces soil piping.
Benefits of irrigation
1. Increase in food production: Due to controlled and timely supply of water to the crop,‘the yield is increased. With the assured supply of water, superior crops take the place of inferior crops,thus increase the crop value.
2. Protection from famine; During the construction of the irrigation Winks, employment is carried to the people and thus they get relief against famine. After the construction of such works, continuous water Supply is maintained during drought
