1 (a) In what way a planned road development can result in socio-economic development of a country? Discuss.
(b) Explain the history of road development plans in India briefly bringing out their salient features.
2 (a) Through the analysis of various forces acting on a vehicle moving on a horizontal curve, explain how the super elevation can counter the centrifugal force.
(b) A vertical summit curve is formed when an ascending gradient of 1 in 25 meets a descending gradient of 1 in 40. The curve is to be designed for an overtaking sight distance required for a design speed of 80 km/h. The rate of acceleration during overtaking is 1.5 km/h/second. Compute the length of the summit curve.
3 (a) What are the objectives and scope of traffic engineering? Discuss.
(b) What are the road user characteristics that influence the traffic on roads? Explain.
4 Discuss about the use of road markings in ensuring road safety. Give suitable examples supported by neat sketches.
5 What are the various types of traffic islands used? Explain the uses of each.
6 What are the various factors to be considered in pavement design? List out and explain the significance of each factor.
7 What are the special characteristics of jet aircraft? How do they affect the planning and design of airports? Explain in detail.
8 Write short notes on the following:
(a) Runway orientation.
(b) Temperature correction for runway length.
(c) Taxiway minimum separation distances.
(d) Airport beacon.
