Anna University Previous Years Question Papers
PAAVAI ENGINNERING COLLEGE
PECHAL, NAMAKAL
INTERNAL TEST -1
Year/dept/Sem :II/civil(a & b)/Iv
Subject: Soil mechanics
Max.mark:50
Duration: 9A.M to10.40 A.M
Part A-5x2=10 marks
1. Why does dry density of soil decrease with increase in soil water content, When soil is compact on the wet side of optimum.
2. List the factor affecting compaction.
3. What is the significances of shrinkage limit.
4. Define density index.
5. Draw the three phase diagram of mass.
PART-B
1. Derive all the function relationship between specific gravity, density, Degree of saturation in term of void radio.
2. A soil has void radio=0.72, moisture content=12% GS=2.7. Unit weight of water is 9.81 kn/m3. Determine its (a) Dry unit weight (b) Moist unit weight (c) Amount of water added per m3 to make it saturated.
3. Differentiate between
(i) Liquidity index and consistency index.
(ii)Flow index and consistency index.
(iii) Plasticity and consistency
(iv)Activity and sensitivity
4. The dry density of sand with porosity of 0.387 is 1600 kg/m3 . Find the void radio of the soil and the specific gravity of the soil solids. Take unit weight of water as 1000kg/m3.
5. The following index properties were determine for two soils A and B.
Property Soil sample A Soil sample B
Liquid limit 30% 52%
Plastic limit 16% 19%
Natural water content 32% 40%
Flow index 11% 06%
Which of these above soil sample.
(a) More plastic
(b) Better foundation materials on remoulding.
(c) Better shear strength as a function of water.
(d) Better shear strength at plastic limit.
(e) Classify the soil as per ISCS. Do this soils have organic matter.
