(Declared as Deemed to be University under Sec.3 of the UGC Act, 1956)
End Semester Examination – November/December 2010
Subject Title: IRRIGATION WATER MANAGEMENT Time: 3 hours
Subject Code: 09CE3105 Maximum Marks: 100
Answer ALL questions (5 x 20 = 100 Marks)
1. Compulsory:
a.What is irrigation? Narrate the several benefits of Irrigation.
b.Describe the factors which necessitate irrigation in India.
2. a.What are the laws followed by flow of water in saturated soil? Discuss in detail and also give their limitations.
b.A farmer desired to develop his irrigation system by installing a deep tube well for irrigating crops over an area of 50 hectare. Irrigation is desired at 50% soil water availability. The mean available water holding capacity of the soil of his farm is 20% per metre depth of soil. The estimated mean depth of root zone of crops is 90 cm. The conveyance and water application efficiencies are set at 80 and 85 percent respectively. The weighted mean daily consumptive use rate of the crops will be 5mm a day. The working hours of the pump would be 10 hours a day. Calculate (i) net irrigation requirement in each time, (ii) gross irrigation requirement for every irrigation, (iii) irrigation period each time and iv) the required capacity of the irrigation system.
(OR)
3. What is meant by leaching? Describe in detail about the leaching requirement of saline soil.
4. What are the different methods of water distribution? Describe in detail.
(OR)
5. Describe the criteria for scheduling irrigation based on soil water status.
6. a. Discuss the merits and demerits of furrow irrigation.
b. Explain surge irrigation and its advantages.
(OR)
7. Describe in detail the irrigation efficiencies that are frequently used in practice.
8. a. Describe the components of a drip irrigation system.
b. Explain the principles of selecting a sprinkler irrigation system.
(OR)
9. Compare drip irrigation with sprinkler irrigation.
