PART A - (10 X 2 = 20 marks)
1. Define tool signature.
2. State any four functions of cutting fluid.
3. Distinguish between drilling and reaming.
4. Differentiate between shaper and planer.
5. State any four operation parameters of a grinding process.
6. What is meant by honing?.
7. Differentiate between gear forming and generating.
8. Why gear finishing is required?
9. What are the alignment tests that are necessary for lathes?
10. What are the adverse effects of vibration and chatter in machining?
PART B-(5X16=80 Marks)
11 i) Describe with neat sketch swiss type automatic screw machine. (8)
ii) Discuss the types of transfer machines. (8)
12 a i) Explain merchant's force circle. Mention the assumptions made. (8)
ii) In an orthogonal cutting test with a tool of rake angle 10°, the following observations were made:
Chip thickness ratio : 0.3
Horizontal component of the cutting force = 1290 N
Vertical component of the cutting force = 1650 N
From Merchant's theory, calculate the various components of the cutting forces and the coefficient of friction at then chip tool interface. (8)
