Paper - I : Special English
Time : 3 Hours Maximum Marks : 80
1) A) Answer any TWO of the following, each in 200 words: (16)
a) What is the Latin element in the English language?
b) Write an essay on the nature and evolution of standard English.
c) Illustrate with examples the role of word formation in the growth of English vocabulary.
d) Write a paragraph on any Two of the following:
i) Specialization
ii) Euphemism
iii) Acronym
iv) Idiom
Read the following passages (B) and (C) carefully and answer the questions that follow. Your answer should be complete. They will be evaluated by the correctness of your language and relevant matter. (8+8=16)
B) One day a very old lady was traveling in a train. She was very well dressed. She was sitting in a corner, quietly reading a book. The traveling ticket examiner came into her compartment and asked for the ticket. The old lady looked in her bag but could not find it. She then looked for it among her other things but still she couldn’t find the ticket.
The ticket examiner could see that the old lady was visibly trembling. She started sweating. Her water bottle fell down and rolled to one of the corners spilling its contents all the way; but she didn’t seem to notice it. She was trying to open the side pocket of her hand bag from the wrong side. Finally not knowing what to do, the old lady cried out impatiently, “I’ve lost my ticket. Pull the chain please”.
The ticket examiner said, “Please don’t worry. I know that you’re honest. I shall make sure that you do not have any trouble.” But the lady said, “You do not understand. If I do not find my ticket, how will I know where I have to get off ?”
(i) Why did the ticket examiner tell her not to worry?
(ii) What was the old lady doing in the compartment?
(iii) Where did the old lady search for her ticket?
(iv) What did the ticket examiner assure her about?
(v) Pick out the word from the passage which means ‘not cheating’.
 C) We scatter seeds with careless hand
 And dream we never shall see them more;
 But for a thousand years
 Their fruit appears
 In weeds that mar the land,
 Or healthful store.
 The deeds we do-the words we say
 Into still air they seem to float;
 We count them ever past-
 But they shall last,
 In the dread judgement, they
 And we shall meet!
(i) How do we scatter seeds?

(v) On which day do we meet with the consequences of our deeds and words?
2) a) Answer any ONE of the following in 200 words: (8)
(i) Write a critical appreciation of the poem “Scorn not the Sonnet”.
(ii) How does Shelly describe the West Wind as a destroyer and preserver?
(iii) Critically examine Thomas Gray’s “Elegy written in a country churchyard”.
 b) Answer any ONE of the following in 200 words: (8)
 (i) Comment on “The Ballad of Father Gilligan”.
 (ii) Bring out the lyrical beauty of the lyric, “A Red, Red Rose”.
(iii) “My last Duchess” is one of the most successful poems of Browning. Explain.
3) a) Answer any TWO in about 200 words: (8+8=16)
(i) Explain the features of one-act play with special reference to “The Best-Laid Plans”.
(ii) Analyse J.B. Priestley’s characterization in “Mother’s Day”.
(iii) ‘A Marriage Proposal shows the desperation of Lomov and Natalia for marriage, Discuss.
(iv) Describe the importance of ‘plot’ in the One Act plays.
 b) Answer any TWO of the following in 200 words: (8+8=16)
 (i) Do you think that the sacrifices Jim and Della made were sensible?
 (ii) Bring out the humour in “The Interview”.
(iii) What are the events that lead up to the murder of the old man in “The Tell-Tale Heart”?
(iv) Explain the features of a short story with a suitable example.
