(a) “Chaucer’s poetry reflects the dawn of Renaissance.” Do you agree? Give a reasoned answer.
(b) Critically examine the Romantic Movement in English poetry as a revolt against tradition and social authority.
(c) Discuss the salient features of Modern Poetry with special references to Yeats, Elliot and Auden.
2. Answer any one of the following questions: 16
(a) Enumerate the factors that contributed towards the development of the English drama in the sixteenth century.
(b) Write an essay on the Restoration Comedy of Manners.
(c) Write a critical note on the drama of wit and dialogue with special references to Oscar Wilde and G. B. Shaw.
3. Answer any one of the following questions: 16
(a) Trace the growth of the periodical essay in the eighteenth century with due emphasis on Addison and Steele.
(b) Give an estimate of either Carlyle or John Ruskin as the representative thinker-writer of the Victorian age in English literature.
(c) Assess critically some of the personal essayists of the twentieth century.

(a) Comment on the growth of novels in the eighteenth century with references to Fielding and Sterne.
(b) Estimate the contributions of the women novelists of the Victorian period.
(c) Write a note on the ‘stream of consciousness’ technique in twentieth century English novel.
