PT 2K6/2K6 EC 803 : COMPUTER COMMUNICATION AND NETWORKING

I. 1) Diceuss star and bus network topology, giving its features, merits and demerits. [Marks 5]
2) Determine the checksum and transmitted code polynomial for the message x^9+x^8+x^6+x^4+x^3+x+1 if g(x)=x^4+x+1. [Marks 5]
3) List few quality of service parameters of transport layer. [Marks 5]
4) Give the SONET architecture and explain each layer.

5) State and explain Littles theorem. Also derive the expression. [Marks 5]
6) Define the different types of delays a packet on a link suffers. [Marks 5]
7) Give comparison between lPV4 & lPV6. [Marks 5]
8) Describe SSCOP - service specific connection oriented protocol of
AAL protocol. [Marks 5]
II. A) Explain in detail with examples, neat sketches and necessary derivations the
following:
i) Framing - All types
ii) Aloha and slotted Aloha Protocols. [Marks 15]

B) Explain with neat sketches, and examples the working of all the ARQ
retransmission strategies, Also derive the expression for the throughput in each
case. [Marks 15]
III. A) 1) Explain with neat sketches the TCP connection management. [Marks 7]
2) Discuss the TCP and UDP Header structures. [Marks 8]

B) Discuss the congestion control policies used in TCP, also explain the internet
congestion algorithm. [Marks 15]
IV. A) 1) An Go back n ARQ system is used to transmit packets. Retransmission
occurs when a packet is lost or rejected at receiver with probability P,
independent of other packets. Assume the packet is one unit long and a
maximum wait for an acknowledgment of (n-1) packet time before a packet is retransmitted. Determine
i) Average service time in terms of n & p.
ii) Expected customer waiting time in queue in terms of n & p. [Marks 15]
2) The arrival rate of packets lambda = 5/sec. in an M/M/1 system. The packets are
getting served at an rate of 10 per sec.
Find:
i) The average waiting time in queue
ii) Average number of packets in queue
iii) Average number of packets in the system. [Marks 15]
