(2007 Admn. Onwards)
PT 2K6/2K6 EC 803 : COMPUTER COMMUNICATION AND NETWORKING

Time:3 Hours Max. Marks :100

I. 1) Diceuss star and bus network topology, giving its features, merits and demerits. [Marks 5]

2) Determine the checksum and transmitted code polynomial for the message x^9+x^8+x^6+x^4+x^3+x+1 if g(x)=x^4+x+1. [Marks 5]

3) List few quality of service parameters of transport layer. [Marks 5]

4) Give the SONET architecture and explain each layer.
[Marks 5]
5) State and explain Littles theorem. Also derive the expression. [Marks 5]

6) Define the different types of delays a packet on a link suffers. [Marks 5]

7) Give comparison between lPV4 & lPV6. [Marks 5]

8) Describe SSCOP - service specific connection oriented protocol of
AAL protocol. [Marks 5]

II. A) Explain in detail with examples, neat sketches and necessary derivations the
following:

i) Framing - All types

ii) Aloha and slotted Aloha Protocols. [Marks 15]

OR

B) Explain with neat sketches, and examples the working of all the ARQ
retransmission strategies, Also derive the expression for the throughput in each
case. [Marks 15]

III. A) 1) Explain with neat sketches the TCP connection management. [Marks 7]

2) Discuss the TCP and UDP Header structures. [Marks 8]

OR

B) Discuss the congestion control policies used in TCP, also explain the internet
congestion algorithm. [Marks 15]

IV. A) 1) An Go back n ARQ system is used to transmit packets. Retransmission
occurs when a packet is lost or rejected at receiver with probability P,
independent of other packets. Assume the packet is one unit long and a
maximum wait for an acknowledgment of (n-1) packet time before a packet is retransmitted. Determine
i) Average service time in terms of n & p.

ii) Expected customer waiting time in queue in terms of n & p. [Marks 15]

2) The arrival rate of packets lambda = 5/sec. in an M/M/1 system. The packets are

getting served at an rate of 10 per sec.

Find:

i) The average waiting time in queue

ii) Average number of packets in queue

iii) Average number of packets in the system. [Marks 15]

OR

B) 1) Discuss reservation and polling system used to scheduling the packets.

2) Derive the expression for steady state average waiting time in the multiuser
system. [Marks 15]

V. A) Discuss the structure of ATM Adaptation layer. [Marks 15]

OR

B) 1) Discuss the comparison of AAL protocols.

2) Explain the different service categories used in ATM networks.

3) Discuss cell formats in an ATM network. [Marks 15]
