lnstructions : i) Answer all questions.

1. a) Define the terms - state, process, system property and thermodynamic cycle.
b) State and explain clausius and Kelvin Planck'statements of second law.
c) Sketch and explain the working principle of 4-stroke diesel engine.
d) Derive the expression for air standard efficiency of otto cycle interms of
compression ratio and ratio of specific heats.
e) With the help of temperature - enthalpy diagram, explain the mechanism of
steam formation.
f) Give comparison between vapour compression and vapour absorption system.
g) Sketch and explain the principle of sand casting.
h) Sketch and explain the principle of milfing. (5x8=4)
2. a) Two Celsius thermometers 'A' and 'B' agree at the ice point (0"C) and the
steam point (100'C) and are related by the equation tA = /+ mt, + ntfr where to
and tr are thermometer readings and l, m and n are constants. When both
thermometers are immersed in an oil bath, thermometer A indicates 51'C and B
registers 50'C. Determine the readings of A when B reads 30"C.

b) Derive the expression, for work transfer in
i) Constant pressure process
ii) Constant temperature process.
iii) Adiabatic process
iv) Polytropic process. 15

3. a) An air standard dieset cycle has a compression ratio of 18 and heat transferred
to working fluid per cycle is 1800 KJlkg. At the beginning of compression,
pressure is 1 bar and temperature is 300K. Calculate
i) Pressure and temperature at each point in the cycle.
ii) The thermal efficiency of the cycle.
iii) Net work transfer in the cycle. .l

b) Sketch and explain the working of :
i) Reciprocating pump
ii) Centrifugal pump. l
4' a) With a neat sketch explain the working principle of cochran boiler. 1
