Instructions : i) Answer all questions.
ii) Assume suitable data that are not given.
I. a) What is interference of light ? What are the conditions necessary for obtaining
interference fringes. ,
b) Explain Fresnel and Fraunhoffer diffraction.
c) State and explain Heisenberg's uncertainty principle.
d) Write a note on Nuclear Magnetic Resonance.
e) What are the differences between spontaneous and stimulated emission of
Radiations ?
0 Explain the operating principle and uses of optical fibres.
g) Discuss the effect of temperature on electrical conductivity of metals.
h) What is a superconductor ? Mention some important properties and uses of
superconductors. ,

II. a) i) Describe how Newton's rings experiment is used to determine the

wavelength of a monochromatic radiation and derive the relevant formula.
ii) An airwedge of angle 0.01 radians is illuminated by monochromatic light
of wavelength 600 nm falling normally on it. At what distance from the
edge of the wedge, will the 10th fringe be observed by reflected light.

b) i) Describe how elliptically and circularly polarised light are produced and
detected.
ii) A beam of plane polarised light is converted into circularly polarised light
by passing it through a crystal slice of thickness 30 pm. Calculate the
difference in the refractive indices of the two rays inside the crystal ifthe
wavelenglh ofthe light used is 600 nm.

m. a) r) Set up time independent Schrodinger wave equation and explain
. expectation values.
ii) Compute the first three permitted energy values for an electron in a box of
width 4A. Given : Planck's constant: 6.63 x 10 -34 JS and electron
mass:9.11 x l0 -3t kg.

b) i) For an electron in one dimensional potential well, discuss the solution of
Schrodinger's equation and hence show that the energy of the electron is
quantised. 10
ii) Write a note on Electron Spin Resonance.
IV. a) i) Explain the operation of a Helium-Neon gas laser with the essential
components. How stimulated emission takes place with the exchange
of energy between Helium and Neon atoms.
ii) What is holography ? Mention its applications.
OR
b) i) Describe ulnasonic testing systems and the methods involved in nondesffuctive
testing of materials.
i| How are X-rays produced ? What is the principle behind X-ray radiography ?
V. a) i) Define relaxation time and mean free path. Based on free electron theory
derive an expression for the electrical conductivity in a metal.
iD Write a note on Fermi-Dirac distribution of electrons.
OR
b) i) What is Hall effect ? Describe with necessary theory, the method of finding
the nature and concentration of carriers in a semiconductor.
ii) Explain in brief the BCS theory of super conductivity.
