(Understanding Poetry)

Section-A
1. Explain with reference to context any three of the
following. Add critical comments where necessary :
(a) Thine ages askes ease, and since thy duties bee
To warme the world, thats done is warming us
Shine here to us, and thou art everywhere;
This bed thy centre is, these walls, thy sphere.
(b) In the world's broad field of battle
In the bivouac of life,
Be not like dumb, driven cattle
Be a hero in the strife !
(c) Nor shapes of men nor beast we ken
The ice was all between
The ice was here, the ice was there,
The ice was all around.
(d) For I thought I saw the windows close
Like the closing of the eyes
I thought I heard the pillars groan.
And the dark rooms heave a sigh.
(e) On reapers, reaping early
In among the bearded barlay
Here a song that echoes cheerly
From the river winding clearly.
(f) Weep no more, woeful shepherd, weep no more
For Lycidas, your sorrow, is not dead,
Sunk though he be beneath the watery floor;
So sinks the day-star in the ocean-bed.
(g) A poet could not but be gay,
In such a jocund company :
I gazed and gazed but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought.

2. (a) Which figure of speech have been used in the
following lines :
(i) Fled like the flood's foam.
(ii) Like a comet through flame.
(iii) I fancy these pure water and the flags.
(iv) An abbot on an ambling pad.
(v) That pass the harbour mirror.5
(b) Attempt any one of the following :
(i) Trace the difference between a lyric and a
ballad.
(ii) Define symbol and myth.
(iii) What do you understand by the term 'mock
