Electrical and Electronics Engineering 

EE 8011 – FLEXIBLE AC TRANSMISSION SYSTEMS 

(Regulations 2017) 

Time : Three hours Maximum : 100 marks 

Answer ALL questions. 

PART A — (10 x 2 = 20 marks) 

1. What is the need for FACTS controllers? 

2. Why shunt compensation is always attempted at midpoint of transmission line? 

3. How many midpoint SVC’s required to enhance the maximum power transfer capability of the transmission line to thrice that of the uncompensated line? 

4. List the advantages of slope in dynamic characteristics of SVC. 

5. What is Bang-Bang control in TCSC? 

6. Enumerate the need for variable series compensation. 

7. What is meant by sub synchronous resonance? 

8. Define SSSC and list the components in it. 

9. Write the frequency range for the study of different control interactions. 

10. What is the need for coordination of FACTS controllers?

 

PART B — (5 x 13 = 65 marks) 

11. (a) Explain the effect of shunt and series compensation on power transmission capacity. (13) 

Or 

(b) Discuss the possible control actions to maintain the voltage at rated value in transmission line. (13) 


12. (a) Discuss in detail about the static and dynamic characteristics of SVC. (13) 

Or 

(b) Discuss the method of improving transient stability with SVC. (13) 13. (a) Discuss the role of TCSC in the enhancement of system damping. (13) 

Or 

(b) Write about the basic principle of TCSC. Enumerate different modes of operation in TCSC and Explain them. (13) 


14. (a) Describe with neat diagram, the basic construction. principle of operation and V-I characteristics of STATCOM. (13) 

Or 

(b) Explain the principle of operation of SSSC and series-compensation using SSSC with necessary diagrams and expressions. (13) 


15. (a) Discuss with phasor diagram, the different modes of operation of UPFC. What are the advantages of VPFC? (13) 

Or 

(b) Discuss in detail about Interline DVR and Interline power flow controller. (13) 


PART C — (1 x 15 = 15 marks) 

16. (a) Explain and analyse the variable reactance modelling for stability studies. (15) 

Or 

(b) (i) Explain in detail about the design aspects of UPQC. (7) 

 (ii) Discuss in detail about TCR-FC integration. Also write about the merits and demerits of the system. (8)
